"Better than gelato!!! Yes, I said it!!! While in Rome, we ate gelato at least ten times in four days! When in Rome ... And then something caught me completely off guard. We walked past a store that had the Magnum logo on it, the same Magnum ice cream bars I eat literally every week in America. Wait ... they have a store where they make a Magnum bar from scratch? And the customer gets to custom design it? OH MY GOODNESS!!! In a counterintuitive order, you begin your experience by paying, then select up to three toppings, and finally choose the vanilla or chocolate ice cream base. Backward from the American ice cream experience, but who cares? It works! I designed the perfect ice cream bar by choosing the meringue bits, the caramel cubes, and the mini-brownies. From a hidden freezer, the young man who spoke perfect English pulled out a naked vanilla ice cream bar on a stick. I watched as he dipped it in the most beautiful liquid milk chocolate (called classic), quickly hardening into a crunchy shell (they also offer white chocolate and dark chocolate shells). The toppings were added, and on request he drizzled white chocolate on top. It's almost sacrilege to make this statement, but I would skip all the amazing gelaterias in Rome just to eat at the Magnum Pleasure Store again. It's hard to beat gelato in the country that invented it, but the perfect ice cream bar simply beat it fair and square.
